Spain to allow trans people in army

Spain is reforming its armed forces laws following a legal battle from a transgender man who was rejected from applying to the army.

The man, identified only as Aitor GR, was born female but had hormone treatment and a mastecomy as part of his sex reassignment treatment. He is on a waiting list for genital surgery.

The Spanish army rejected Aitor GR on the grounds that he was legally a man but had no penis, and was therefore regarded as medically unfit.

The would-be soldier appealed the decision, saying “I want to be a soldier, not a porn star.”

Carme Chacón, Spain’s minister of defence, has promised to revise the legislation concerning medical reasons for exclusion from the armed forces.

A ministry spokesman said last week that under the new guidelines the lack of a penis would no longer be sufficient reason for excluding a male army candidate.
