Ugandan politician to be banned from UK

Protest boards April 20th, 2010

A Ugandan MP who is trying to impose the death penalty for gay people in Uganda will be banned from entering the UK if the law passes.

David Bahati is proposing a change to the law of his country that would see ’serial offenders’ - men who have had more than one gay experience - put to death. Any man who had sex with a disabled man or a man under the age of 18 would also face the death penalty. Anyone who ‘promoted homosexuality’ would face life imprisonment.

118 British MPs have signed an Early Day Motion condemning the proposed Ugandan Bill. The British Foreign Office, Department for International Development and Borders Agency are also drawing up plans to block Bahati’s visa, banning him from coming to the UK.
One senior British government source told the Guardian that the issue could turn into a “major diplomatic incident if the Ugandans do not back down”. President Barack Obama has described the proposed legislation as “odious”.

Homosexuality is already illegal in Uganda.
