United Nations declaration on homosexuality expected next week

A declaration calling for homosexuality to be decriminalised is expected to be put before the United Nations General Assembly around the middle of December.

The declaration of principle would have no legal status, but would be a symbolic gesture of UN support for LGBT human rights. Currently no international human rights convention explicitly acknowledges the human rights of LGBT people.

The UN decriminalisation declaration will be tabled in the General Assembly with the backing of all 27 member states of the European Union. South Africa and the US are among the many countries that have not indicated their backing.

86 countries in the world currently have a total ban on male homosexuality, and a smaller number also ban sex between women, with penalties ranging from a few years jail to life imprisonment. In at least seven countries or regions of countries the sentence is death.

Today (10 December 2006) is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

  • I suppose support from the UN can only aid the LGBT cause. Crazy that there are 86+ countries that are so backward!
