Devout Christian Jennifer Keeton, a counselling student at a university in the US, has filed a lawsuit against the college claiming it tried to force her to change her anti-gay beliefs.

Keeton, 24, told students in classes at Augusta State University and wrote in written assignments that she thought homosexuality was immoral and a “lifestyle choice”, but claims the university said she must change her beliefs or face being expelled.

The trainee counsellor refused to take part in a ‘remediation’ programme set up by the university to improve her attitude to gay people, insisting their lifestyles were”‘identity confusion”.

Keeton has now lodged her complaint with the US District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. Her action is being supported by the Alliance Defense Fund, a group that defends the right to express religious beliefs.

According to a spokesman for the fund, the university is “imposing thought reform” and persecuting Keeton for her views.

The university has responded to Keeton’s complaint, saying it does not discrimate against anyone for their personal, social, political or religious views nor would it expel a student on these grounds. It did not comment on the pending lawsuit.
