Will Margaret Thatcher attend a civil partnership ceremony?

Maggie Thatcher March 13th, 2008

Conservative MP and close friend of Margaret Thatcher Alan Duncan has announced that he and his partner James Dunseath are to have a civil partnership, prompting speculation as to whether the ex-Prime Minister will attend the ceremony.

Thatcher famously introduced the Section 28 clause in 1988 during her time as Prime Minister. Section 28 stated that a local authority ’shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality’ or ‘promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.’ The clause was finally removed from UK law in 2003.

Mr Duncan is the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. He is the first Conservative MP to announce his intention to enter into a civil partnership.

The Sunday Times reports that up to 300 people may attend the ceremony. Mr Duncan has not revealed whether or not he has invited his close friend Baroness Thatcher.
