World’s first lesbian bishop

Eva Brunne June 1st, 2009

The Church of Sweden is thought to have made a world first by appointing a gay woman as bishop.

Eva Brunne, who is in a registered partnership, was voted Lutheran bishop of Stockholm.

Brunne and her partner Gunilla Lindén, a priest in the same church, have a three-year-old son. When asked by journalists whether this would present a problem for the Swedish church, Brunne said it wasn’t, joking “The backyard of the bishop’s house is big enough.”

Following her appointment, Brunne said: “I am happy and very proud to be part of a church that encourages people to make their own decisions. Diversity is a big wealth.”

Since 1 May 2009 gay couples have been able to marry in full religious ceremonies in the Church of Sweden.
