‘Yoga can cure homosexuality’

The recent high court decision to decriminalise homosexuality in India has been formerly challenged by a yoga guru, who claims homosexuality is a disease which can be cured with yoga.

Swami Baba Ramdev filed the petition against the Delhi High Court ruling, which was made last week.

“It [homosexuality] can be treated like any other congenital defect,” said Ramdev in the challenge filed in the Supreme Court.

“Such tendencies can be treated by yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises) and other meditation techniques.”

Ramdev’s petition is the second challenge to the decision. Astrologer Suresh Kumar Kaushal also filed a petition demanding that the law against homosexuality be reinstated.

Kaushal’s argument is that if homosexuality is legalised, “tomorrow people might seek permission for having sex with animals”.

On 2 July 2009 the Delhi High Court ruled that the law against consensual gay sex was a violation of India’s constitution.

Homosexuality had been illegal in India since 1860, when Britain imposed anti-sodomy laws on what was then a colony of the British Empire.

  • It is a bit ironic that they mention Indian techniques as being a “good cure” for something that was made illegal under British rule.

  • I was under the impression that yoga gurus were pretty anti-sex, gay or straight?
