Wales’ largest Pride event has been cancelled for 2008.

The volunteer-run Cardiff Mardi Gras, which last year featured performances from Sheila’s Wheels, Sonia and Nicki French, will not take place this summer due to financial problems and lack of community support.

“High demands placed on committee members have made it difficult to retain volunteers and attract new ones,” said Mark Williams of Safer Wales, one of the organisers of the event. “The committee have worked hard in recent years to raise funds and with growing costs for the event and infrastructure this has become increasingly difficult.”

Cardiff Mardi Gras has been free since it started in 1999, funded through sponsorship and donations. The 2007 event cost approximately £100,000.
