90% of French ‘gay civil partnerships’ made by heterosexuals

The majority of French Civil Solidarity Pacts - the French equivalent of the UK Civil Partnerships - are taken out by heterosexual couples, according to official figures.

The Civil Solidarity Pacts (known in France as PACS) provide all the legal benefits of marriage, but they are faster to process and dissolve.

The PACS take just 15 minutes to complete and can be ended with just a single letter from either partner. Ex-partners have no legal claims to the other person’s money or property.

Of the 150,000 couples joined in PACS every year in France, 135,000 are heterosexual.

  • “The Civil Solidarity Pacts (known in France as PACS) provide all the legal benefits of marriage”

Hum, it’s not quite true, there are in particular differences in parental rights (e.g., for adoption), which is one of the reasons why the right-wing doesn’t want marriage for homosexual couples.

In the case of a couple with a non-french person, there are also differences concerning the right to gain french nationality or have legal papers to stay in france.

  • Typical straights going for the easy option. Maybe they should get rid of formal straight type marrige and keep civil partnerships for all. That way the right wingers would get one up there … weather the like it or not.

  • Personally, I think there should be civil partnerships for all, and if you are religious and want a marriage ceremony, fine, do that in your church or temple. But it shouldn’t be any business of the state IMHO.

Its outrageous that in a democracy, religion has so much power any way. I didn’t vote for them! And I don’t see why they have a right to impose their moral code on those of us who don’t share their religion. Evidently a lot of French couples feel the same - hence the popularity of PACS among straights.

I am in a Civil Partnership myself, and we also had a Humanist marriage ceremony on a different day. Best of both worlds IMHO.
