First Mardi Gras planned for North Wales
July 8th, 2010 by Martina.Booth
North Wales will hold its first Mardi Gras in spring 2011.
Next April’s two-day carnival - which will include live music, stalls and a funfair - will take place at the Mona showground on Anglesey. It is being organised by gay organisation Mesmac.
Mesmac’s Keith Parry told the BBC that the event would be “great fun”, adding that there was a need for a Mardi Gras in north Wales.
“When the Three Crowns in Bangor became a gay pub seven years ago people said it would never last, but it’s still going strong,” he said.
“With the Mardi Gras we aren’t quite sure how many people will come along, but we expect it will be around 1,000.”
In addition to the Mardi Gras, three drag queens will hike up Snowdon to raise funds for Mesmac next month.
