Gay cartoons to exhibit in London

January 28th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

A series of cartoons documenting gay life from the 1970s to the present day will go on exhibition next week.

Drawn Out & Painted Pink, a retrospective on the work of cartoonists Kate Charlesworth and David Shenton, documents gay cultural history including Section 28, civil partnerships and HIV/AIDS.

The cartoons, which have appeared in publications including The Guardian, the Pink Paper and Good Housekeeping, have been described by lesbian writer Ellen Galford as offering “a devastatingly accurate self-portrait of LGBT life in the UK”.

“They’ve got us bang to rights in the ways we were, the ways we are and the ways we could be. These are social documents of the highest order,” she said.

Approximately 240 cartoon strips will be exhibited, accompanied by installations that comment on gay culture and history. Visitors will be guided through the 1980s nightclub themed exhibition by a pink timeline that highlights landmark gay events.

The exhibition will run at The Drill Hall in central London from 2nd - 28th February. For more information go to www.drillhall.co.uk.
