Gay penguins stealing eggs

Cunning penguins December 1st, 2008

Two gay male penguins in a Chinese zoo have been trying to steal eggs from straight birds to become fathers.

The cunning penguins have been trying to trick other birds by placing round stones at their feet and then waddling away with the real egg.

Experts at the Polarland Park in Harbin, north east China, say that despite being gay, the three-year-old male birds still have the urge to be dads.

“One of the responsibilities of being a male adult is looking after the eggs. Despite this being a biological impossibility for this couple, the natural desire is still there,” a keeper told the Austrian Times.

The zoo has decided to segregate the gay couple in a different enclosure. “It’s not discrimination,” insisted the keeper. “We have to fence them separately, otherwise the whole group will be disturbed during hatching time.”

  • How cunning of them!

Couldn’t the keeper give them a real egg to foster?

  • Where would the keeper get a penguin egg from?! In the wild, these birds might have been able to make themselves useful helping to care for the eggs of fathers who had died etc., but in captivity I doubt there’s any in that situation.

I think this is a really sweet story :)

  • Awww, that’s cute. They should let the couple keep one of the eggs that they steal and put them and that one egg in a seperate place so that they may raise the baby together :)
