“Gay pie” causes offence
January 28th, 2009
A ’slightly gay’ pie has been removed from the menu of a New Zealand restaurant after a complaint to the Human Rights Commission.
The New Zealand Herald reports that the chicken, brie and sweetcorn pie was described as ’slightly gay, I know, but oh so tasty’. A member of the public was offended at the description and complained to the Human Rights Commission, who then contacted the restaurant.
Owner Phillip Kraal said he has been writing colourful menus for 15 years and had no desire to upset anyone. “We serve the gay community just like any other group,” said Kraal. “You can’t please everyone all the time though.”
“Sometimes I get it wrong and I fix it. But it’s about trying to put a bit of texture into the menu. The rest of the menu has words like ballsy and bloody - it’s about having a good time.”
“I am flamboyant and fun just like the gay community - except that I am straight.”

at least it wasn’t an all out fagpie
