Gay Pride updates: Blackpool, Brighton and Birmingham
February 9th, 2009
As Gay Pride festival organisers get set for 2009 we’ll be posting updates on what’s happening around the UK. First up: updates on Blackpool, Brighton and Birmingham.
Blackpool Pride expands
Blackpool council will this week decide whether this summer’s Blackpool Pride can be relocated to the heart of the city.
The Pride committee is hoping that Dickson Road could be closed for the festival, enabling Pride to take place in the centre of the gay quarter of the town.
Dickson Road is one of Blackpool’s main arterial routes, with heavy traffic and around 22 buses an hour that would need to be rerouted.
Blackpool Pride will take place on 16 and 17 May 2009.
Gay card fundraising for Brighton Pride
Tourists to Brighton are being offered a ‘gay card’ for £2.50, which will give discounts to bars, clubs and shops while raising funds for Brighton Pride.
“The card is a way for businesses who are supporting Pride to raise money but also give back to the individuals who are also supporting the charity by buying the card,” said Nick Mosley from Brighton Visitor. “We’re hoping that if it’s successful then we’ll be doing it again for Summer Pride, but on a much larger scale, even selling the card in London.”
Brighton Pride will take place from 25 July to 2 August 2009, with the Carnival Parade on 1 August. The theme of the 2009 festival is ‘Pride Beside The Seaside’.
Birmingham Pride looking for volunteers
Birmingham Pride is calling for individuals and organisations to get involved with the 2009 event.
Festival organisers want to hear from people keen to get involved either as volunteer helpers, entertainers or providing sponsorship.
Lawrence Barton, Birmingham Pride festival director, said: ‘We want to be as inclusive as possible and are seeking volunteers to help make this year’s Pride even more successful than previous events. We are currently talking to a variety of sponsors and would still welcome interest from organisations willing to get involved.
“Big-name acts are planned for the main stage, the hugely popular cabaret marquee will make a return together with a fun fair, village green ‘best in show’ competitions, a fab market to browse, beer tents, community areas and of course the village’s many bars and clubs.”
Birmingham Pride will take place on 23 and 24 May 2009.
