Tipping the Velvet novelist Sarah Waters has pledged to walk over hot coals for feminist campaign group The Fawcett Society.

The celebrated lesbian author has signed up for the sponsored Feminist Firewalk to raise funds for the longstanding equal rights charity. The event has attracted other famous supporters including Oona King, Ken Livingston and Tanika Gupta. They will join Waters on Thursday 4 February at Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in London.

The Fawcett Society, which traces its roots to 1866 and the Suffragette movement, is also inviting members of the public join the fundraising appeal. They are celebrating the occasion as an opportunity for a shared, empowering experience, as well as an important fundraising event.

Waters is one of the UK’s most popular female authors. She has been nominated for the Man Booker Prize three times, for Fingersmith (2002), The Night Watch (2006) and this year’s The Little Stranger. As a supporter of The Fawcett Society Waters was previously involved in their “This is what a feminist looks like” campaign and has said: “Feminism is part of a wider struggle against all inequalities. Surely the real question should be, not ‘Why are you a feminist?’ but ‘Why aren’t you one?’”
