Manchester’s Canal Street to be pedestrianised

Canal Street September 21st, 2009

Sections of Manchester’s gay village will be traffic-free on Friday and Saturday nights as part of a pilot scheme running in October 2009.

Between 8pm and 4am on Friday and Saturday evenings parts of Sackville Street and Bloom Street will only be open to pedestrians. Vehicle access will be restricted on parts of Richmond Street and Brazil Street.

If reaction to the pilot is positive the pedestrian zone may become a permanent weekend feature.

Liverpool’s Gay Quarter has similar plans to pedestrianise the busiest streets on weekends.

Manchester residents can give their opinions on the pilot scheme via email to p.richardson1@manchester.gov.uk or by calling 0161 954 9000. A public meeting will also be held at 7pm on Tuesday 22 September in the Rembrandt Hotel, Manchester.
