Nepal to hold first gay Pride parade

Nepal will host its first Pride event next year July 29th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

Nepal will hold its first gay pride parade next month, according to the country’s only out gay MP.

Sunil Pant told AFP he hopes up to 3,000 LGBT people will march through the capital Kathmandu on 25th August.

“We want to make this a truly international event,” said Pant. “Nepal has made so much progress on gay issues in the last few years, and we hope to spread hope and inspire others.”

The parade will feature a candle-lit memorial service for victims of HIV and violence, plus live music.

It will coincide with the traditional Hindu festival, Gai Jatra, in which men dress up as women. In recent years, the festival -which commemorates those who died the previous year  - has been adopted by Nepal’s gay community.
