Thomson Holidays claims it has become the first mainstream tour operator to launch a range of packages for lesbian and gay couples.

Its Freedom Collection, available in an e-brochure, offers same-sex couples a range of locations to stay at that have been approved by the GayComfort online accreditation programme.

This is a scheme launched by campaign group Out Now and is the only one to be recognised by the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association.

According to Thomson’s innovation manager Phillipa Morgan, there is a “definite appetite” for gay-friendly holidays.

She said: “The reason we’ve taken this approach is because research has shown that three out of four gay or lesbian holidaymakers actively search out hotels they believe are genuinely welcoming.”

The package ensures ATOL protection and offers a holiday advisor who can give advice on the area, beaches, nightlife and gay scene.

At present, seven locations are included in the brochure, including Gran Canaria, Ibiza and Spain.

In addition, Thomson is also offering to help organise civil partnerships for its customers in the various destinations.
