US Church ordains first lesbian bishop

Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool May 19th, 2010 by Martina.Booth

The first openly lesbian bishop has been ordained in California by the US Episcopal Church.

Mary Glasspool, 56, becomes the second openly gay bishop in Anglican church history, after Gene Robinson was ordained in November 2003.

Rev. Canon Glasspool said that her ordination was “a benchmark for the whole church”.

“We are being the church that we say we are. We’re not just saying it, we’re doing it and there’s something very powerful about that. It’s bigger than the both of us,” she said.

“So I’m looking forward with great awe as well as joy and some ‘wow’ to whatever the Holy Spirit has in mind.”

Rev. Canon Glasspool’s appointment has been hugely controversial, with The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, saying that it “raises very serious questions not just for the Episcopalian Church and its place in the Anglican Communion, but for the Communion as a whole.”
