“We’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not going shopping without coupons”

Do you carry pink pounds in your pocket? No, me neither. I’ve just emptied the contents of my wallet on the desk and making up the grand total of £2.48 there are some brown-gold coins, some shiny silver coins and a few grubby copper coins, and they all look remarkably unhomosexual.

Sexual orientation and finance might not seem too connected at first, but on closer inspection, both govern our lives. Your sexual orientation dictates who you fall in love with, but your finances decide where you can take them on dates. Perhaps the most fascinating thing about money is how little people talk about it. That’s why one of the best features about personal finance blog Queercents (motto: ‘we’re here, we’re queer, and we’re not going shopping without coupons’) is the 10-question interviews with famous queer people.

Who would’ve guessed, for example, that sex expert Susie Bright thinks she would be a terrible prostitute because she’s a bad actress and just not charming enough, or that Megan Mullally, aka Karen from Will and Grace, used to make bead necklaces to make ends meet before her big break? One of the best interviewees is also one of the least self-obsessed. Donna Rose is an advocate for transgender and transsexual issues in the US, and her description of the financial difficulties experienced exclusively by transfolk is a definite eye-opener.

But if that’s too serious, stick to the fluff. Mad Men actor Bryan Batt used to be a ‘fragrance model’ and teach aerobics. Dr Susan Love’s father suggested she become a plumber because it was important to have marketable skills (instead she founded a breast cancer research foundation). Jai Rodriguez from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy thinks lesbians never go out because they love watching documentaries too much.

Money might not be able to buy happiness, but it’s a great source of queer gossip…
