“What do you see in the scene?”

Shane has a lot to answer for June 5th, 2008

Tess Owen is sick of the gay scene. And here’s why…

I have heard it all before. The scene is a ’safe-place’ where LGBT people can meet new people, with similar ‘interests’ and know that they won’t get beat up for holding hands with their same sex partner. Does anyone, anyone, still access the commercial gay scene for those reasons? If so, let us know…

It seems that the main motivations for visiting the scene are to look for ‘fresh meat’, have a drama with an ex or… you’re actually straight and in a hen party. It always feels like people aren’t there to enjoy the company of the person they arrived with; constantly wandering eyes, excessive texting and fruitless tweaking of hair spikes says they’re after more.

There may be something deeper going on but I can’t see it. Every time I walk into a gay bar I am blinded by the freakish sight of a mixture of Shane wannabe’s and their even more amateurish followers. The atmosphere is so loaded with insecurity, hormones and poppers that I want to run around and deal out leaflets and advice on self-esteem and substance misuse before it’s too bloody late.

To top it all off, this entire debacle is taking place in venues that are completely below the standard of other ’straight’ bars and clubs. Tacky, dirty, over priced and not a shred of loo roll. Because you’re not worth it.

Why oh why oh why can’t a few of the next generation choose Bette as their idol, instead of Shane? We might then witness a snobbish uprising against the poor standard of the commercial scene - and at least a bit of intelligent conversation at the bar!

  • I totally agree, alcohol, insecurity, bad music and inflated prices! I want to meet other gay gals, but in places where there is something going on other than how many wkds you can get down yer neck! I can understand why gals don’t go back once they’ve found someone to cop off with.
