IconControversial government drugs advisor sacked

A right-wing Christian activist has been removed from a government advisory panel because of his homophobic views. The Home Office says that Dr Hans-Christian Raab failed to mention his controversial opinions when interviewed for the role.

The GP’s appointment to the Advisory Committee on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) led to heavy criticism from LGBT groups, drug experts and politicians. He is involved in the Council for Health and Wholeness, a Christian organisation that links gay people to paedophilia and describes the “the homosexual lifestyle” as “destructive”.

Potential members of the ACMD are required to disclose any information from their personal or professional lives that may prove embarrassing to the government. Dr Raab’s appointment was revoked after his past work on “the gay movement” received a great deal of press attention.

Dr Raab told the Daily Mail that “My appointment has merely been revoked as a result of my views on matters completely unrelated to drug policy”. He further claimed that his dismissal was the result of discrimination against “traditional” Christian values: “I am being discriminated against by a Home Office Minister and am being sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.”

Daily Mail columnist James Slack has written a column condemning the dismissal, published alongside an article which describes Dr Raab as a “respected family doctor”.
