IconCountry star Chely Wright ties the knot

American country singer Chely Wright married her girlfriend Lauren Blitzer on Saturday, four months after getting engaged to the LGBT rights campaigner.

Since coming out in May 2010, the artist has been outspoken concerning homophobia in the country music scene. Last year, Wright told LA Times reporter Geoff Bucher: “They will forgive you if you beat your wife, lose your kids to state, get six divorces, make a sex tape, get labeled as a tramp — any and all of it is better than being gay.”

Following the wedding on Saturday, messages of support were posted to the couple through twitter, from fans and celebrities including Rosie O’Donnell and Glee actress Kristin Chenoweth. Wright and Blitzer later posted photos of their nuptials on the site, as well as retweeting some of the inflammatory comments they have received.

Both brides wore white at their wedding, which was held on Blitzer’s aunt’s estate in Connecticut. Wright told People.com that they decided against veils because, “we liked our hair too much!” The 200 guests in attendance were treated to a BBQ reception after the ceremony, which was preformed by a rabbi and a priest.
