London Pride’s u-turn over Soho celebrations

Organisers of Pride London 2010 have reversed a decision not to hold celebrations in the iconic area of Soho at this weekend’s event.

The charity last week announced that it would have to withdraw any events in Soho after deciding the area was “no longer viable” due to difficulties with its license and roadworks due to the development of the Crossrail line in the capital.

The decision to withdraw from Soho for this weekend’s Pride event had been met with much disappointment and criticism by Pride goers with Soho usually making up a key area of festivities and events at the annual event.

However, at a meeting last night (28 June), Pride London, Westminster City Council and the Metropolitan Police gave the green light for Pride to hold a street party in the area.

Pride London warned that there will still be restrictions in Soho - there will be no outside bars or stages - but revellers will be able to visit the area as part of the celebrations.

Paul Birrell, chair of Pride London, said: “After last week’s genuinely disappointing conclusion that Soho was not viable for our usual Pride event, I’m genuinely pleased that we have been able to negotiate a street party for Soho with our colleagues in Westminster and the Metropolitan Police.”

“Westminster City Council, the police and fire brigade all agreed that there was no way we could leave Soho empty on such an important LGBT day, and were as dismayed as we were that the event did not look viable. I am hugely grateful for their assistance and advice in reaching such an agreeable solution.”

Last year’s event attracted around a million people and organisers are hoping for a similar number at this weekend’s event. For more information, visit the Pride London website.
