IconGrand plans for Liverpool’s gay village

Liverpool’s city council has unveiled plans to redevelop and promote its gay quarter. It is believed that the area could contribute a great deal to the city’s tourism industry and international reputation.

The council is funding a £12,000 consultation on how best to market the city as a gay tourist spot, to be undertaken by urban planning consultancy Feria Urbanism. They hope that the gay quarter will come to compete favourably with other gay districts in cities such as Manchester.

“We want Liverpool to be known as an inclusive city,” said Councillor and cabinet member Nick Small. “We have made strides in this in recent years and are being seen as a more gay-friendly city than was the case a few years ago. The success of the Pride festival last year was evidence of that.”

Liverpool held its first Pride festival for over a decade last year in the wake of a series of homophobic assaults.
