80% of countries disapprove of lesbian fertility treatment
December 19th, 2008
Same-sex fertility treatment has popular public support in only three European countries.
A survey of people in 15 world countries found that only three countries – Holland, Denmark and Spain – had majority support for same-sex couples using sperm banks to conceive children.
The BBVA Foundation surveyed 22,5000 people from 15 countries: Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Austria, the Czech Republic, the United States, Japan and Israel.
1,500 people in each country were asked to rate how they felt about same-sex couples accessing fertility treatment, ranging from 0 – ‘totally unacceptable’ to 10 – ‘totally acceptable’.
Only three countries scored 5 or higher: Holland (5.4) Denmark (5.2) and Spain (5).
The countries with the most negative attitudes to same-sex fertility treatment were Poland (1.1) and Italy (2.4), both strongly Catholic countries. The UK and USA scored 3.4 and 3.7 respectively.
