Gay conversion therapy is harmful, scientists say
July 2nd, 2010 by Chloe.Setter
Doctors have approved a motion backing a call to ban the use of “conversion therapy” on the grounds that it is harmful and discredited.
More than two-thirds of doctors at the British Medical Association (BMA) said the Royal College of Psychiatrists and other mental health bodies should not use the controversial treatments and health departments should investigate any alleged conversions that have taken place on the NHS.
The declaration by the UK’s medical association and union body has been described as a “watershed moment” by gay rights campaigners.
The vote by doctors at the BMA’s annual meeting in Brighton follows a year-long undercover investigation by journalist Patrick Strudwick, published in The Independent. He described some of the treatment he endured while posing as a ‘patient’ as “psychological torture”.
Tom Dolphin, vice-chairman of the BMA’s junior doctors committee, said: “Sexuality is such a fundamental part of who a person is, that attempts to change it just result in significant confusion, depression and even suicide. You can’t just wish away same-sex attraction no matter how inconvenient it might be.”
TF there is some action towards stopping the practices of these dangerous lunatics. Especially as one of them, Philippa Stroud is an advisor to the new government, or rather was until it came out she had been trying to exorcise gay people with prayer (http://www.libdemvoice.org/philippa-stroud-sutton-cheam-19249.html)
