Lesbian trainee PC ‘accuses police of homophobia in suicide note’

A lesbian police officer who hanged herself at her home has allegedly accused her former colleagues of homophobia.

Lara Goldie, 28, who was a probationary officer at the Metropolitan Police’s Hendon training college, is believed to have committed suicide at her flat in Hackney, London, at the weekend.

She left behind a four-page suicide note, which spoke mostly of her personal life, following her split from her long-term partner.

However, it is claimed that in the note she also accused her police colleagues at Hendon, as well as Haringey station where she worked, of homophobia.

An investigation by the Metropolitan Directorate of Professional Standards has now been launched but it is thought that her colleagues have all strongly denied the accusations.

A Met spokesman said: “Her death is not being treated as suspicious. It is tragic that a young officer has died. At this sad and difficult time, our thoughts are with Lara’s family, friends and colleagues. It is a tragedy.”

  • In my experience & to my factual knowledge UK Police REMAIN the primary homophobic Hate Crime problem ad the greatest risk to the safety of LGBT people…at least named, known & identified homophobes protected within the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary are!

  • I am an out gay Police Officer in Lancashire and I have never experienced homophobia from any of my colleagues, either towards me or towards other members of the LGBT community. There will always be bad apples within any organisation but it is wrong to tar all Police with the same brush.

  • A friend of mine recently left the police because she couldn’t stand the blatant homophobia of her workplace. It’s there and it should be confronted, not dismissed as ‘a few bad apples’.

  • Sad but her sexuality no doubt contributed to her unhappiness

  • @george-
how would someone’s sexuality contribute to their unhappiness? it is not the orientation that contributes to unhappiness but how it is perceived by the world.
