Award-winning author Jeanette Winterson has told the Evening Standard that she has withdrawn her backing for Nick Clegg.

Winterson was one of many celebrities and authors who signed an open letter endorsing the Liberal Democrats and the Party leader during the general election campaign.

She told the Standard: “I wouldn’t sign it again and I wouldn’t support them. Nick Clegg might as well become a Tory moderate.”

Winterson went on to say: “The rest, well, we need a new party. I am ready to organise.”

Actor Colin Firth recently withdrew his support after the Liberal Democrats failed to oppose the rise in student fees. Author Phillip Pullman is also reported to have said that he “never would have signed”.
