LGB housing guide launched
A guide has been launched to give lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people housing advice.
The housing guide, developed by Stonewall with The Albert Kennedy Trust and Stonewall Housing, gives bespoke information for gay people about renting, tenant rights and homelessness.
Louise Kelly, information officer at Stonewall, said: “LGB people often call Stonewall’s info line to find out more about their housing rights. People call to tell us they think they’re being treated differently because of their sexual orientation. This guide addresses these concerns.”
Since April 2007, it has been illegal to discriminate against gay people when providing goods and services, including housing.
However, recent YouGov research for Stonewall claimed that one in five lesbian and gay people expect to be treated worse when applying for social housing.
Bob Green, chief executive of Stonewall Housing, added: “Many of the issues LGB people face in housing could be similar to those faced by the rest of the population, but they also have specific housing issues that can be ignored or misunderstood by others.”
If you want a copy of the guide, it can be downloaded from the Stonewall website here.
