‘I kissed a girl’ song disgusts Katy Perry’s mother

Katy Perry August 19th, 2008

Katy Perry’s song I kissed a girl is “shameful and disgusting”, according to the singer’s mother.

The Daily Mail reports that Katy’s mother, evangelical preacher Mary Hudson, has accused her daughter of promoting homosexuality with the song’s lyrics.

“I hate the song. It clearly promotes homosexuality and its message is shameful and disgusting,” said Katy’s mother, Mary Hudson.

“Katy knows how I feel. We are a very outspoken family and she knows how disappointed her father and I are.”

“I can’t even listen to that song. The first time I heard it I was in total shock. When it comes on the radio I bow my head and pray.”

“We cannot cut her out of our lives as she is our child but she knows we disagree strongly with what she is doing and the message she is promoting regarding homosexuality which the Bible clearly states is a sin. But the Bible also promotes understanding and forgiveness, which I keep reminding myself.”

“Katy was raised in a very strict Christian household. She started performing in church at nine. She was a special child, she loved to sing and had an angelic voice. That is why this is all so disappointing and sad.”

Hudson believes that Hollywood is to blame for her 23-year old daughter’s behaviour: “Katy is not a homosexual but I fear she has been led astray by the Hollywood crowd. I pray all the time that God will work through her and help her find salvation.”

“Some are too revealing and her father has had words with her about it. Like any child she is going through a period of rebellion.”

‘I kissed a girl’ is currently at number 1 in the UK singles charts for the second week running.

  • I think that “I Kissed A Girl” is annoying, misguided and misrepresentational at best; I mean, at least t.A.T.u. made an effort on the “fake lesbian” front. I’m all for promoting tolerance and awareness amongst our fellow human beings, but a song about being drunk and snogging somebody whose name you don’t remember without your boyfriend’s permission isn’t *exactly* the best way to go about it.

Somebody has evidently told Ms Perry that queer is the hot new buzzword to get herself noticed, based on her last two attempts to win over both the gay and the straight with her music; I Kissed A Girl seems to have worked better for the queer-positive community than Ur So Gay, but it’s still not quite there yet. Maybe the third time’s the charm?

  • I hate teh songs lyrics for reasons stated by Ciara (though i really like the tune|) but reading what her mum has to say about it, just makes it clear that religion should be abolished.

  • Katy should maybe have worried more about what her mother thought than whether her boyfriend minded as those annoying lyrics suggest

  • I just wonder why no-one has ‘accused ‘the mother for being so bigoted, up herself and religiously misguided cos’ hey what in the world is so wrong with promoting homosexuality anyway?! it’s good to be gay! Someone should write a song about that…

  • You know that Katy Perry has said that her mom didn’t actually make these comments…

  • Oh, come on! How old is this ‘I kissed a girl’ kid? 18 max? Give her a break! Heaps of lesbians I know had boyfriends at 18, and she’s not trying to be a ‘political voice’ for the worldwide lesbian cause, she’s just made a catchy tune and wants to talk about her cute cherry-favoured kiss. Why so serious???

  • This story is hilarious! This song used to annoy me so much because it’s not about woman-to-woman desire, but about getting turned on by titillating men *blech*. I’m a feminist, queer, bisexual woman who really doesn’t want to hear any more of that kind of heterosexist bullshit when I turn on the radio than I absolutely have to.

However, having read this article, I now say, good on you, Katy Perry! The song is still icky, but I can now see the young woman at the centre of it sticking her middle finger up at her bigoted family.

Context, as they say, is everything.

  • It is a disgusting song..I think her mom should be disappointed. The song literally makes me sick.
But….it is a sign of the times. No morals, no values…
