‘Obama right to forget gay marriage’ - Beth Ditto

Beth Ditto September 6th, 2009

Gossip singer Beth Ditto has defended Barack Obama’s decision to move slowly on the issue of gay marriage.

Same-sex marriage was part of Obama’s election campaign, but since his election the US President has done little to tackle issues such as the ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy on gay people in the armed forces - much to the impatience of LGBT rights groups.

In an interview with Absolute Radio at the Reading 2009 festival, Ditto said that she believed Obama was right to move slowly on the issue.

“I think that [Obama] is smart,” said Ditto. “Health care is more important than marriage, because marriage is stupid anyway.

“The truth is that I do think that he is like a black president who is super liberal and trying to get health care.

“I don’t think that gay marriage is where he needs to start, that’s how I feel, and as a gay I think you’ve got to pick your battles and I think that he’s already got so much shit against him and people are already judging him that I don’t think it’s a priority.

“I think we’ve got to end a war, we’ve got to get health care, we’ve got to get out of whatever, and I don’t think he’s going to win any… I think it’s a political strategy, I don’t think he’s a hater.”
