Singer Janelle Monae has spoken out about rumours she is a lesbian - by claiming that she only dates “androids”.

The Grammy-nominated star, 24, told Rolling Stone magazine: “The lesbian community has tried to claim me, but I only date androids. Nothing like an android, they don’t cheat on you.”

Monae, whose album ArchAndroid came out this year, also discussed her ‘uniform’, which consists of a black suit, tie and saddle shoes.

“I call it my ‘uniform’,” she said. “My mother was a janitor and my father collected trash, so I wear a uniform too.

“I’m trying to open doors for girls who look like myself and have been told they can’t sing about this or that.”
