SUN NEWSPAPER IN GRATUITOUS LESBIAN HEADLINE SHOCKER!

tegan and sara February 21st, 2008

Tegan and Sara, the Canadian singer-songwriters, twins and -gasp- lesbians, were lucky enough to be interviewed by the Sun newspaper recently.

Was the interview a brilliant parody of a lascivious tabloid newspaper, making up for a lack of irony with a touch of homophobic misogyny, or was it just, uh, the Sun? See for yourself…

The interview starts off fairly simply: ‘Are you hoping The Con [Tegan and Sara’s new album] will finally earn you recognition here?’ Tegan: “We definitely are excited to be touring more internationally.”

Onwards with a few more music-related questions: ‘What is it about Canada’s music scene that makes it so healthy?’ Sara: “There is a vast support network through government-funded programmes that reinforces art as a rewarding part of our culture.”

But this is the Sun! The readers are getting bored! Where’s the girl-on-girl action? Time to ask some real questions: ‘Are there any “fighting sisters” episodes on your tours?’ Tegan: “We got in a brawl in a hotel room once. I pinned Sara between a bed and a wall and pulled her jacket over her face.”

Enough foreplay. The Sun needs to talk about the fact that they are not only lesbians but also twins, and allow their readership to dwell glassy-eyed at the porno-possibilities that suggests. But how to do it without looking like a twat? Ah, the oldest trick in the book - pretend it’s someone else’s question: ‘As twins and lesbians, does it annoy you when people focus on this?’ Tegan: “I think the media and our labels in the past have tried to turn it into something gimmicky… We’re happy and proud to be out and known as queer artists and we are also happy that people pay much more attention to the music these days.” And just so it’s clear, Sara reiterates the point: “I think there have been times when journalists have treated it in a gimmicky way.”

So they don’t like their status as lesbians and twins to be used as a gimmick, and they want to be treated as artists, and they want people to pay attention to their music. So how does the Sun headline the interview? ‘LESBIAN TWINS COMING TO UK’.
