“This is where the best music is” - interview with drummer/producer Laura Fares
November 17th, 2008Laura Fares, aka Sam Sparro’s drummer, is the electro-dance scene’s best kept secret. We caught up with her for a quick chat about drumming, producing and getting chatted up by every girl in town.
Laura Fares was born and bred in Argentina, only moving to the UK when she was 21 and hungry for a new music scene. “I thought, this is where the best musicians are based, and some of the best bands come from here, so let’s make it home,” says Laura.
Once in the UK, Laura started drumming professionally, and within a few short years found herself working with electro/soul darling and fashionista Sam Sparro. Although, as Laura explains, she didn’t actually meet him at first.
“I met Sam through an artist called Jont, who I went on tour with for a while,” says Laura. “When Sam got signed to Universal in the UK he was getting a band together, and Jont straight away recommended me. Sam didn’t even meet me, but straight away he gave me a job based on all the music I was into, my electro background. It was meant to be!”
When we spoke to Laura she was on the brink of a new Sam Sparro European tour, but it was cancelled at the last minute - “something to do with the label and the promoters apparently”. But every cloud has a silver lining, which in this case means more time to devote to Laura’s own project, called Disco Damage.
“Disco Damage is electro-dance, mainly,” says Laura. “It’s two of us, me and an artist called Kristin. He does the singing, and I do all the production and music.” The duo have done some remixes for Robyn, who they have toured with, and the upcoming album will also be featuring collaborations with Basement Jaxx.
Producing music might not look like a natural fit with drumming, but it works for Laura.
“I feel that when I do too much of one I miss the other,” she explains. “If I’m only drumming for a long time I really miss writing music, and vice versa.”
Laura acts like she doesn’t realise how incredibly gorgeous she is, but the question is, do other people? Does she get a lot of attention from girls at the shows?
She laughs, embarassed. “I do actually! “It’s really funny. It’s really flattering, but you just make it clear that you’re with someone else.” So she’s not single? “I’m not, I have a girlfriend. You’re grateful for it, and it’s great, but… no thanks. If I was single maybe… but not right now.”
