Portia de Rossi helped wife Ellen DeGeneres celebrate her 53rd birthday in style by dressing up as Marilyn Monroe.

The 37-year-old actress presented Ellen with a video of herself dressed in a blonde wig and white dress singing Happy Birthday, Marilyn Monroe-style, while Ellen presented her daytime TV chat show.

Ellen knew there would be surprises in store on the show, saying: “There are supposedly huge celebrities here, I have been told and I’m going to be surprised.”

The surprises included the birthday video from Portia, a personalised performance from her friend, the singer Pink, as well as visits from Julia Roberts and a cake from Colin Farrell, who gave her a t-shirt with the words ‘Colin and Ellen forever’ on the back.
