First lesbian wedding held behind bars

A prison in Surrey has hosted what is believed to be the UK’s first lesbian civil partnership service behind bars.

Convicted murderer Sara Crane and drug dealer Joanne Davies, both 31, were married at HMP Send, near Woking, according to The Sun newspaper.

The pair wore their own clothes for the ceremony, which cost £250 and was conducted by a registrar at the prison. They celebrated with fellow inmates afterwards.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “We cannot comment on individual offenders held in custody at HMP Send.

“Offenders are entitled to apply to the governor to register a civil partnership in prison under the Civil Partnership Act 2004, so long as certain criteria defined under the Act are met.”

Crane was jailed for life for the killing her neighbour in 2003, while Davies was given two and a half years for intent to supply drugs.
