A gel has been developed which can reduce by the risk of contracting HIV by half. The vaginal gel, which should be applied before sexual intercourse, is the first HIV/AIDs protection available exclusively to women.

The gel could revolutionise the fight against HIV/AIDS, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where 60% of new HIV/AIDs infections are to women.

The gel is 1% tenofovir, an anti-retroviral drug used to treat AIDs.

“We are giving hope to women,” said Michel Sidibé, executive director of Unaids, the United Nations programme on Aids. “For the first time we have seen results for a woman-initiated and controlled HIV prevention option. If confirmed, a microbicide will be a powerful option for the prevention revolution and help us break the trajectory of the Aids epidemic.”

The World Health Organisation hopes that the gel will be commercially available within two years.
