Sportswomen needed for FA research

The FA April 22nd, 2009

The FA is calling for lesbian sports coaches and bisexual athletes to help with two pieces of research into gender and sexuality in sport.

The research is being carried out by researchers at UK universities. If you can help with either study please contact the researchers directly.

1. Gender and Coaching Study
There is a significant absence of women and minority groups within the coaching profession, and their voice in shaping the profession is often unheard.

Dr Leanne Norman from Leeds Metropolitan University is keen to hear from lesbian coaches who would like to take part in new research in this area.

The research is a qualitative, women-centred examination of coaching cultures from the perspective of lesbian coaches from sports in the UK.

2. Homophobic bullying in sport, with particular reference to the experience of bisexual athletes
This piece of research is being done by a PhD student at Brunel University and is a study on the specific experience of bisexual people in sport, within the broader context of homophobic bullying in sport.

It’s hoped the research will fill the current gap in the literature regarding bisexual experience in sporting spheres, where the focus is predominantly on the experience of gay and lesbian people.

Research will be qualitative through detailed interviews with bisexual athletes.

The Football Association (FA) is supporting both pieces of research as part of its commitment to tackling homophobia in football. The research will frame future FA policy and activities which will encourage greater involvement in football from the LGBT community.
