Lesbian Dutch footballers dropped from national team

December 3rd, 2009

Two players in the Dutch national women’s football team have have lost their places in the national squad, allegedly because their relationship was causing problems in the team.

Coach Vera Pauw this week announced she was dropping players.

dyanne130Bito and van den Heiligenberg have been in a relationship for a year and a half, suggesting that Pauw’s decision was not made simply on the fact that the players were a couple.

While refusing to elaborate on the decision, stating that the reasons were “personal”, Pauw did tell Dutch newspaper AD that the two players’ behaviour “was not having a positive influence on performances.”

“Even if Claudia had been performing perfectly I still would have had to remove her from the squad together with Dyanne,” added Pauw.
