Say it to Sappho: her farts are damaging my quality of life!

“Dear Sappho. My girlfriend farts all the time in bed. is this normal??? Shes the 1st person I’ve slept with so i dont know if its normal or not. but she stinks!! HELP!!!” Bev, 17, Plymouth

Bev, some people get so comfortable in relationships that they forget their manners. Take it as a compliment that your girlfriend is comfortable enough with you to… well… let go I suppose!

Whether the quantity or quality of your girlfriends farts is ‘normal’ is irrelevant.  The question is whether or not you can put up with it. If you can, then I think you deserve a medal. If you can’t, you need to consider communicating with your girlfriend about the offensive nature of her farts.  Maybe she doesn’t quite realise how bad they are and she might actually appreciate your honesty.

You’re only 17 and people will probably tell you that relationships are all about compromise.  I agree with this only to a small extent; when compromising means compromising the air you breathe I draw the line.

  • Farting is normal, but stinky farts are usually a sign of a bad diet in my experience (sorry, sound like Gillian McKeith).

I have to take exception to Sappho’s comments though - a lot of people are unable to control the expulsion of wind. Problems such as weak pelvic floors can cause problems (albeit rare in teenagers). So please don’t assume she’s being rude - she might have a genuine medical problem!

Personally, I think some frank, but kindly, talking is required, without making assumptions about peoples motives, and then perhaps a word with the GP or practice nurse. There’s some great advice on the NHS Direct website too.

  • Is she asleep when she farts? Cuz I don’t think that counts.
