Say it to Sappho: Lube… why?

Sappho August 28th, 2009 by Sappho

“Dear Sappho. I have written before, about fisting. You are going to think I’m joking but why would lesbians need to use lube? I thought it was just for older women and gay men. But then my friends were talking about it the other day. I asked why they would use it but they just laughed because they thought I was joking too… Cheers.” X, 24, Preston

Anyone can use lube. It can make a lot of different things a lot easier. Some people don’t need it at all because they are, well, sufficiently wet I suppose. Even some people who are sufficiently wet might use lube because they like the way it feels.

These days, unlike in my day, you can get all kinds of exciting lubricants. Lubes that tingle, lubes that warm up under your breath, lubes that smell like strawberries, lubes that glow in the dark (I may be making that last one up). You can even get lubes that increase blood flow to special areas to create more intense orgasms (that’s a good reason why lesbians might use lube don’t you think?).

It is worth knowing that at different times in the menstrual cycle, women can have different levels of natural lubrication. Also, not being really wet is not necessarily a sign of not being turned on enough. Lube is an essential in terms of sexual health. That extra lubrication can minimise the kind of friction that could cause abrasions/cuts and therefore routes of transmission of STI’s.

If you are thinking of using lube make sure you do a bit of research. There are a lot to choose from. There is some contention over whether water-based or silicone-based lubes are best for your intimate environment. If you are prone to thrush you definitely want to steer clear of anything with glycerin in (form of sugar).

Thanks for asking the question. This is important stuff and there is no such thing as a stupid question.

  • Some women don’t lubricate much, or for long, depending on a wide range of factors (including the fact that we all have different levels of hormones, go through hormonal cycles, etc.). Generally speaking, lube is always handy. For fisting and for anal sex, when you think you’ve got enough lube, add more.

Yes do both a silicone and water-based lube which are organic and are the closest to natural lubrication I’ve ever found.

Use water-based lube with silicone toys; silicone lube will erode silicone toys. And you don’t have to add more water-based lube whenever you feel it becoming tacky - a spray bottle of water close at hand is a great way of renewing the lube’s slickness.

  • Hmm, the Yes link works, but it doesn’t look at all obvious within the body of the text. Just click on it anyway :)
