IconSkins and Torchwood nominated for gay storylines at US awards

Two UK television series have been nominated for awards from an American group that campaigns against gay and lesbian discrimination.

E4 show Skins, a teenage drama set in Bristol, featured a prominent storyline in its latest third series in which character Emily Fitch, played by Kathryn Prescott, struggles to come to terms with her sexuality and feelings for Naomi Campbell, played by Lily Loveless.

Skins, which has its fourth series beginning at the end of this month on UK television, is broadcast on BBC America in the US and has been nominated for the best drama series award by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

Torchwood, also broadcast on the same channel and known for its predominantly bisexual main characters, is nominated for the best TV movie/mini-series category.

Other series up for awards include Gray’s Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, Mad Men and True Blood.

Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, who has recently pledged her support to fighting the US state of Florida’s gay adoption ban, is set to be honoured with GLAAD’s Vito Russo award – given to a gay media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights.

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said: “Cynthia Nixon has been a vocal and visible advocate who has transformed cultural attitudes about our community.”
