IconThe Kids Are Alright gets four Oscar nominations

The Kids Are Alright, a movie that follows the lives of a lesbian couple and their family, has been nominated for four Academy Awards.
The film, which is directed by Lisa Cholodenko, is up for Best Picture, while actress Annette Bening has been nominated for best actress and actor Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Supporting Actor.

It is also in the running for Best Original Screenplay.

The plot follows the lives of lesbian couple Nic (Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore), who have two children, Joni and Laser. The children are half-siblings through the same unknown sperm donor, played by Ruffalo, who ends up coming into their lives and changing the dynamics of the family.

The Kids Are Alright cost an estimated $4m to make, but by October last year had already grossed nearly $21m.

Cholodenko has prevoiusly gained critical acclaim for her 1998 film High Art and directed a one-off episode of The L Word.
