8,000 protest against Prop 8 in San Francisco

Thousands of people across the world this weekend protested against California’s Proposition 8 ruling, which took away gay people’s right to marry in the state. One of the largest rallies was in San Francisco, where police estimate that 8,000 people turned out to protest.

Comedian Wanda Sykes, who recently took part in an anti-homophobic bullying campaign, was in a Las Vegas protest and used the opportunity to come out.

“I got married on Oct. 25,” Sykes told the crowd. “My wife is here.

“You know, I don’t really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn’t feel like I had to. I was just living my life, not necessarily in the closet, but I was living my life.

On the claim that being gay is a choice, Sykes said “That’s like telling me I chose to be a woman or I chose to be black. Are people straight because they chose not to be gay?

“I am proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman and I’m proud to be gay. Now let’s go get our damned civil rights!”
