BBC dismisses ‘Most annoying…’ homophobia complaints
January 19th, 2009
The BBC 3 programme ‘Most Annoying People: 2008’ was not homophobic because the comments were ‘light hearted’, according to the BBC.
The complaints refer to comments made about Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson on the BBC 3 programme in early January 2009.
BBC radio presenter Spoony and porn star Ron Jeremy made several remarks which were branded “gratuitously sexist and homophobic” by Tatchell.
In response to complaints, the BBC issued this statement:
“The contributors to the programme were expressing their own personal views and opinions. What’s key is the context in which those comments were made. In this case they were meant in a light hearted way with no malicious intent.
“The BBC has clear guidelines around the representation of people of all cultures and backgrounds on all our channels and stations and we’re committed to reflecting the lives and concerns of all our diverse audiences.”

I complained about this, and the transphobic comments, I got that reply about the homophobic comments, but they didn’t even mention the transphobic comments… It’s not like the BBC to let stereotypes be perpetuated and minority groups insulted. I’m not pleased.
