BBC to conduct major survey into LGBT representation
January 23rd, 2010 by Kim.Renfrew
The BBC is launching a major exploration into how audiences view its portrayal of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in its broadcasts. The research is being undertaken by the BBC Working Group on Portrayal and Inclusion of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Audiences, chaired by Tim Davie, which was established last year to look into the ways that LGBT people are portrayed by the corporation.
The research will include an online survey, which includes questions about the appropriateness of language used about LGBT people by the BBC, LGBT in the news and the representation of bisexuals, along with 28 focus group sessions with both lesbian and gay, and straight audiences.
Writing on the BBC blog, Davie says “This is the most comprehensive piece of research ever carried out in this area by the BBC and we’re doing it because, as a public service broadcaster, we have a responsibility to serve all of our audiences.”
The findings of the research will be published this summer.
