Corrie lesbian kiss cleared by Ofcom
May 25th, 2010 by Chloe.Setter
A lesbian kiss between two characters in ITV soap Coronation Street has been cleared by communications regulator Ofcom, following complaints.
The kiss, shared between Sophie Webster, played by Brooke Vincent, and Sian Powers, played by Sacha Parkinson, was aired on April 23.
The pair, who play best friends in the popular Manchester-based drama, recently confessed their feelings for each other after reconciling their friendship. Their first kiss was shown on April 11 and watched by 7m viewers.
A further kiss, less than two weeks later, prompted 10 complaints to Ofcom, under Section 1 of the broadcasting code concerning ’sexual material’.
The regulator reviewed the complaints but ruled that the scenes were not in breach of the code and said it would take no further action.
Why would a gay kiss have to be ‘cleared’ by OFCOM? We see straight kisses, sex, rape, sexual assault as well as drug use, violence, guns and murder all the time (not that i am complaining) and nobody ever complains…. But a gay kiss no that’s a step too far.
The very thought that a gay kiss has to be ‘cleared’ to be on TV is an insult..
Chell ∼ June 6th, 2010 5:05 pmwhy do we value two wo/men killing each other holding guns more than two wo/men holding hands?
thehumanthings ∼ June 7th, 2010 9:28 amWhy are there girls all over each other in music vids when a kiss on a daily show needs to be cleared?….
Anonn ∼ June 8th, 2010 9:09 pmBlimey O’Reilly! Two women kissing on TV! What to do?! Personally, I’d rather watch two people expressing their love for each other than expressing their hatred by beating them up *cough* EastEnders *cough*.
