Date set for Coronation Street’s first lesbian kiss

The Rovers Return February 10th, 2010 by Siobhan.McGuirk

Coronation St. will feature its first lesbian kiss on April 9th, claims The Sun. The episode will see religious teens Sophie Webster and Sian Powers lock lips after a comforting hug leads Sophie to exclaim, “you’re more important to me than any lad.”

The story broke yesterday when The Sun claimed a show insider was providing details for their exclusive. While a spokesperson from the soap would neither confirm nor deny the story, rumours about the storyline have circulated since last year.

The storyline is said to follow the chastity-vowing girls as they discuss Sian’s (Sacha Parkinson) breakup with boyfriend Ryan, after he makes a move on Sophie. The unnamed source told The Sun, “Sophie and Sian think they’re just good friends but their feelings for each other have been growing.”

The two actresses had been prepared for their kissing scenes. Adding further fuel to the rumours, Brooke Vincent, who playes Sophie, told an interviewer last year: “I’ve just told her [co-star Sacha] as long as she sticks to her own side when it comes to the kissing scenes things will be fine. But no tongues!”

Coronation St. has featured the character Sean Tully, an openly gay man, as a central cast member since 2004. The soap also broke new ground with mainstream TV’s first transsexual, Haley, who arrived on screens in 1998. Although this will be the first lesbian clinch on the Street, soaps including Hollyoaks, Eastenders and Emmerdale have each featured kisses between women. In 1994 Brookside made British TV history when Beth Jordache (Anna Friel) kissed Margaret Clemence (Nicola Stephenson), the first lesbian kiss shown in a pre-watershed programme.
