De Rossi writing tell-all autobiography

Portia de Rossi, the wife of TV personality Ellen DeGeneres, has revealed she is writing an autobiography that will detail her coming to terms with her sexuality.

In an interview with The Advocate magazine, the Australian actress said: “I’m writing a book. It’ll be published in the fall, so… I have to be done with it before then. It will deal with all the secrets that nearly killed me.”

The book will reveal details of her ‘outing’ while she was working on US TV series Ally McBeal and her 2008 marriage to DeGeneres.

Speaking about the union, she said: “I thought I’d feel more blasé about it, more comfortable. But it’s the complete opposite – I’ve become a lot less selfish.

“I’m constantly thinking about her needs and our needs as a team. It’s a lovely, symbiotic partnership. Who knew marriage could be like that? I’d only heard bad things about it.”

In the interview, de Rossi also discusses her role as an advocate for gay marriage, in particular her opposition to Proposition 8, a controversial amendment to the Californian Declaration of Rights that states marriage is only “valid” between a man and a woman.

She: “I think it’s up to us to save marriage, up to gay people across the country, seeing as though we’re fighting for it so vehemently.

“This whole thing has been a wave of excitement and hope, and then it gently falls back into despair. And then it picks up again.

“Unfortunately, we’re the ones who have to suffer this, this humiliation really. There’s a kind of dignity that’s been stripped from us. Gay people are the ones who have to suffer through it – but without it, it won’t change.”

She added that, since getting married, she felt she could “make a difference” and “stand for something”.
